Midsummer Madness is a series of challenges laid down to photographers around the summer solstice.

The challenges are intended to push you and to get sharing and support of one another through social networking.

They're also intended to be FUN!

The Sunday roundup

[Message sent via Facebook mail]

Hi all,

Well done you all – I have to admit, plans for Midsummer Madness 2011 was to be more ‘together’ and a whole load of stuff got in the way and, frankly it became a little difficult for me to keep pushing and ‘rallying’. So, to everyone who took part so far – thanks.

If you’re still wanting to complete challenges (or even start your first one) there’s some good news – you have until the end of Thursday (and we’ll include the end of Thursday 30th June 2011 all around the world in that) to submit images for the ‘finished product’.

There are four ways of doing this, which are Flickr group discussions, the Facebook event wall, by email or mms.

There were 8 real challenges, plus the ‘setup’ postcard challenge and the mini challenge (of which there was only one in the end) all challenges and instructions are posted on the website – http://midsummermadness2011.wordpress.com/

To set a few concerns to one side…
- What can I post? You can post any image created from an original photograph taken after the relevant challenge was set. Midsummer Madness was about new photography and, as such, only new photography will be included in the end product.
- Can I post more than one response to any challenge? Yes – some demand it. If you’re personally happy that the images are appropriate then submit away.
- The Clock Challenge [Don't Panic!] – what the **** do you want? Easy – I want a single item that sums up your response to the challenge; it needn’t include all the images, or only one from each mark/brief but, to be included in the finished document it must be more than one image placed together in some way, shape or form. This can be a collage, montage, movie, zine… [hint - the more interesting the response the more likely it'll get featured...]

Well, that’s it for Sunday.

More will follow in the week to help us arrive at a complete publication to sum up the fantastic response to the challenges you’ve been set.

Challenge 8: What’s the story?

The final challenge of this year’s midsummer madness is to tell a story photographically – from a single, self explanatory (or completely vague) unlabelled image through to a series of images with accompanying words (however you might attach them to the photos)

Basically tell a fiction or non fiction story using new photos or others shot for the previous challenges.

And that’s the last of the challenges.

Until next time.

Keep on posting images to flickr and Facebook – the uncuration will begin on 1st July – so, to be part of the group outcome, ensure your images are posted on either (or by email or text) before the end of 30 June.

And, speaking of social…

To link back to the previous Midsummer Madness*, those of you in Leeds are invited for coffee at 10:30 tomorrow (Sat 25th) to compare notes and to see the final challenge being set.

Location: Caffe Nero, Park Row, Leeds (opposite the Light)

If you can’t attend, why not take a break wherever you are at the same time..?
*The last event had an impromptu meet at the same branch of the coffee chain.

Challenge 7 : Summer social

Garden parties, festivals, fetes and picnics are all social events that tend to happen around summertime.

So… take a socially-linked photo?

BBQ-tastic.

Challenge 6: “hi there, sunshine”

Well, this one is contentious – but let’s see what it brings!

Short – and sweet.

Challenge 5 – the ritual

Midsummer itself came about because of pagan rituals, celebrating the high point of summer and starting to cast an eye to the forthcoming winter.

Record the rituals you see – either those of you and yours to those of other cultures. Or maybe the signs and suggestions of rites being performed.

One thing is for sure – this would have come out earlier if I’d held to my posting rituals! (sorry to keep you waiting – the world of work needed my attention)

And, before I go… There’s very little feedback. How are you doing and finding it? Where are you struggling? How are you stepping outside comfort zones (and if not, why not?) and what stories have you to tell of recording the madness?

Hold true.

Challenge 4: the longest day

Today, in Leeds is the longest day of the year.

The sun rises at 04:35 and, deities willing, it sets at 21:41

More daylight hours than any for another 364…

So the task description today is simple – in one or more photos, sum up your day.

Message ends… For now :-)
